The World’s First Smart Multi-Table Experience
August 25, 2024
Of the hundreds of multi-table tournaments run in card rooms and restaurants throughout the world, almost all of them operate without providing access to player insights, hand replays, video content, and the like. Operators spend time and effort shuffling around the room to get players to their seats, and spend countless hours on tedious logistics instead of figuring out how to organize a perfect experience for their players. We spent the last year at Firefly creating a seamless tournament experience that simplifies the burden for operators while still maintaining the human touch for a great hospitality experience, all using RF technology.
In this post, we detail:
The remarkable advantages of a multi-table setup
The operational simplicity of this approach, efficiency improvements for operators, and ease of implementation
Real-world success stories that demonstrate its effectiveness from a business and product standpoint
A glimpse into the future, discussing how this scalable concept could revolutionize the industry
Let's jump in!
The Testing Ground
A restaurant called Firefly Grill & Bar in Alpharetta, GA was the first sandbox for all of our ideas. We executed a multi-table arrangement that enhanced the game experience while incorporating seamlessly with a restaurant concept in a way that proved beneficial for all parties involved. Through freeroll tournaments and a focus on social-first experiences, we set out to prove that this innovative approach could be both profitable and resonate deeply with a broader audience of players.
On the restaurant side, Firefly Grill & Bar was looking for a solution for a problem that is common to many restaurants: slower weekdays. Free-to-play bar poker clubs, like Atlanta Poker Club, saw an opportunity to collaborate with us, aiming to deliver an elevated and consistent gaming experience that utilizes technology and coaching to bring new players into the game. While the arrangement certainly made sense for all parties, we still faced significant challenges in executing multi-table tournaments. These tournaments require considerable labor for tasks such as seat assignments, sign-in and sign-out tracking, chip distribution, managing the tournament clock, payouts, and overseeing points and leaderboards. Additionally, logistical hurdles emerged when integrating a restaurant setting into the mix—players constantly moved around, names were often unknown, player memberships and coupons weren't tracked, add-on purchases went untracked, all on top of the standard concerns and issues posed by running a poker tournament. It was clear that a more streamlined approach was necessary.
Solving for Firefly
To overcome these challenges we introduced three smart RF Tables and the associated hardware, which includes RFID-powered tables, chips, and playing cards. Our system transformed the way tournaments were played, enhancing the player experience through automated live streaming and data tracking utilizing TV displays. It similarly solved many of the major pain points for the tournament operators, leveraging the hardware and the RF App to automate seat assignment and changes, tournament clock, chip counts, and providing all of that information on the screens throughout the room. The technology seamlessly integrates with camera switchers, the player-facing RF App, and operates on a basic network, ensuring a smooth and integrated experience without added operating expenses.
The installation process at Firefly Grill & Bar was swift, taking just one week to mount cameras and set up the tables. Newer RF Camera packages with similar setups can now be completed in a single day. Dealer training is similarly efficient, requiring only 15-30 minutes to acclimate dealers with the RF interface. At Firefly, players are able to deal and play simultaneously, due to the entire system not only easy to manage but also player-friendly.
Game Changer
The introduction of RF Poker's proprietary tournament interface brought a new level of operational simplicity and efficiency to the events. The automated tournament clock and player management system eliminated the need for manual oversight, allowing the entire process to run on its own. The role of the tournament director was significantly streamlined, as they could now focus on enhancing the player experience rather than getting bogged down in administrative tasks. It became effortless to manage seat assignments, chip distribution, and even leaderboard updates, reducing the labor-intensive aspects of tournament operations. This automation not only ensured accuracy and fairness but also allowed the staff to focus on what truly mattered—providing an engaging and enjoyable experience for every player.
Along with improving operations, the player experience was completely redesigned. Real-time action is now displayed on 10 TVs throughout the venue, capturing every critical moment—from live all-ins with equity, outs, and eliminations to the bubble for payouts and the crowning of the winner. Chip leaderboards, bad beats, and other highlights are automatically broadcasted on these screens, keeping both players and spectators fully engaged. The live streaming setup at Firefly Bar & Grill is powered by 18 cameras, offers dynamic automated multi-table switching, and even allows for remote commentary, making the experience feel like a professional-level event. For players, the accompanying RF App offers a suite of features that elevate their game. They can access to their entire hand histories, track their performance over time, and view leaderboards, while AI-driven coaching provides insights to improve their strategy. The RF Score system further personalizes the experience, giving each player a clear sense of their standing and progress, making every tournament not just a game, but a journey of growth and excitement.
All Numbers Go Up
The impact of RF Poker's technology on the restaurant’s business has been nothing short of remarkable. Since the system's implementation, player turnout has consistently surpassed 45 participants every night, all without any additional marketing expenses. This influx of players has significantly boosted the restaurant's revenue, with each participant spending an average of $40 on food and beverages. This translates to an estimated $35,000 or more in added monthly revenue—a substantial increase driven by the enhanced gaming experience. The restaurant's only investment is a modest $200 nightly prize, making the entire venture incredibly profitable with minimal costs. Many of our players have improved their game with the RF app and a few have even won WSOP rings and bracelets ever since. The points system and leaderboards in the app keep the community engaged and eager to come back. Importantly, this setup provides a gambling-free experience, ensuring compliance with regulations while still offering a thrilling and engaging environment for patrons.
Furthering the Possibilities
The effectiveness of this model has us looking ahead for ways to develop and scale the concept beyond the proven ideas. We particularly see an opportunity to develop a network of venues that could become the TopGolf of poker and card games. We are calling it Showdown Social. Even more importantly, this model could easily scale to hundreds of bar poker restaurants across the country, each offering a similar experience. Beyond restaurants, dedicated cardrooms can leverage this technology to run multi-table tournaments, generating endless shareable content and tracking thousands of players.
The future also holds exciting possibilities for enhancing the experience even further. We’ve tested and developed never-before-seen game variants to increase diversity of gameplay that will entice even the most seasoned players. Other upcoming features include the ability to stake players from anywhere in the world, automated clips and shorts generation, and live score tracking of your friends to keep the social aspect at the forefront and make every game a connected, global event.
The journey of integrating RF Poker's technology at Firefly Grill & Bar has transformed the venue into a vibrant hub for multi-table card game experiences, delivering both operational excellence and enhanced customer satisfaction. What began as an experiment to boost weekday traffic has blossomed into a model of success, with player turnout consistently exceeding expectations and revenue soaring thanks to increased in-house spending. The ease of managing complex tournaments, combined with real-time action displays, live streaming, and a feature-rich player app, has created an unparalleled gaming environment that resonates with both casual players and enthusiasts alike.
Still at the Outset
Firefly Grill & Bar's success story is just the beginning. The future of multi-table card game experiences is bright, with endless opportunities for growth and innovation, poised to redefine how we connect, compete, and enjoy the timeless thrill of poker and card games.
